Everything you need to know about UNIPRINT at UNL

Q1: What is Uniprint?
A: Uniprint is the campus-wide software-based laser printing solution provided as a cost-effective solution to give student users high-quality, affordable laser printing. It is made by a company called Pharos.

Q2: Who can print using Uniprint?
A: Any UNL student, faculty or staff with a current Active Directory account can print in any lab where Uniprint is available (see below).

Q3: When was Uniprint implemented?
A: Uniprint was fully deployed in all IS labs as of 9-1-03. Uniprint continues to expand to departmental labs around the UNL campus.

Q4: Where is Uniprint available?
A: Uniprint Laser printing is available at about 50 printers around campus including:
  • All Information Services computer labs
  • CBA Coe Lab
  • UNL Libraries (City and East Campus)
  • CEHS Labs
  • CIT Labs (East Campus)
  • Chemistry Lab
  • College of Journalism Labs
  • Barkley Center Resource Lab Rm 124
  • More locations to be announced in the future

Q5: Why change the method of printing in the labs?
A: UNL students have regularly complained that the dot matrix printers were woefully inadequate for their needs in the labs. In fact, dot matrix printers were our biggest source of complaints from student users because they were too slow, too noisy, gave poor quality prints, and always jammed. Additionally, previous laser printing services in the labs were inconsistent and confusing for many users. Uniprint offers a consistent and affordable high quality alternative to the previous printing services that we offered.

Q6: How much does it cost?
A: Every student receives a one-time $2.50 initial credit in their Uniprint account. Printing costs are:
  • Regular laser prints = $0.09 ea.
  • Duplex laser prints (double-sided) = $0.15 ea. (where available)
  • Color laser prints = $0.40 ea. (where available)

Q7: How / Where do I put money into my Uniprint Account?

A: You can place funds into your Uniprint account by using your NCard online at: uniprint.unl.edu.

You will need to know your:

  1. Ncard NPIN # (obtained by going to the NCard Office in the Union) (Forgot your NPIN? Click HERE!) - NOTE: Your NPIN is not the same PIN as your WAM PIN, however once you have your NPIN, you can change it to match your WAM PIN by going to ncard.unl.edu under the "account services" tab.
  2. NUID # (8 digit number found on the lower left-hand corner of your red NCard).

*The minimum amount you can put into your Uniprint account is $2.00, and the maximum is $40.00.

A: You can also pay by check, credit card, or cash at any of the 3 UNL computer store locations. (City Union basement, East Union 2nd floor, or 501 Building)

Q8: Can I put funds (money) into another user's Uniprint account?
A: Yes, just ask a lab consultant for help.

Q9: How do I get a refund?
A: Refunds will be handled on a case by case basis. Please see any on duty lab consultant. Users should make doubly-sure that the print job looks the way they want BEFORE they print. Refunds will not be provided for user-induced formatting issues. However if the printer malfunctions (low toner, streaks in printout, blank pages, etc.) a refund will be provided.

Q10: How can I check my Uniprint balance or transaction history?
A: Blackboard now has a module to allow UNL students to see their current Uniprint balance and transaction history. Click HERE to learn more.

Q11: Can non-students (faculty, staff, etc.) print in the labs using Uniprint?
A: Yes, but first you will need to have an Active Directory account. Please see a IS lab consultant for help in manually creating a Active Directory and Uniprint account.

Q12: How is Uniprint funded?
A: Uniprint is entirely self-supporting. Student technology fees are not used to fund Uniprint or any printing in the labs. The cost per print is designed to cover every aspect of printing in the labs including leasing printers, paper, toner, maintenance costs, NCard transaction fees, state sales tax, system upgrades, accounting + technical overhead and licensing, etc. Our goal is to come as close as possible to covering all printing expenses without either profiting or losing money in the process.

Q13: Is duplex (2-sided) printing available?
A: Duplex printing is available on most of the Kyocera laser printers in the labs, but NOT on the HP laser printers. Duplex (or two-sided) printing is cheaper than regular printing in that you will be charged $0.15 ea. versus $0.09 per regular one-sided print. Duplex printing with your own paper inserted into the manual feed tray costs the same as when using our paper.

Q14: Why do I have to log in to Uniprint every single time that I print?
A: One of our primary concerns was the prevention of unauthorized users printing from someone else's account. Having to enter a password for every print job eliminates this problem.

Q15: What about color laser printing?
A: Color laser printing is now available in the Union lab from the Union Lab, Lounge and Laptop computers ... and also at the Henzlik lab from the Henzlik lab, Henzlik laptop and Henzlik multimedia computers. Cost is $0.40 per print.

Q16: Can I use my own paper?
A: We strongly request that you only use our paper in the printers to avoid damage to the printers. We do not issue refunds for printing problems when users opt to use their own paper instead of ours. Using your own paper is done at your own risk.

Q17: Can I print on transparencies?
A: No. All transparencies are banned due to the potential of harm to the printer fuser unit. Transparency printing can be done at the Instructional Design Center (IDC) in Henzlik Hall or in the Copy Shop in the Nebraska Union.

Q18: Why eliminate free dot matrix printing?
A: Dot matrix printers were a huge source of frustration for most lab users. They were slow, noisy, severely failure prone, exceedingly wasteful and gave poor quality printouts that seemed to satisfy no one. If you ever noticed the completely full waste paper bins in all the labs, you will know what we mean.

Q19: What about printing from my personal laptop or computer?
A: We are working on a solution to allow anyone to print to labs Uniprint printers from any internet location (like dorm rooms, etc.). Details coming soon.

Q20: What about printing from one of the Labs laptops?
A: Any labs laptop can print to the laser printers in the Union computer lab (or East Union lab for East Union laptops or Henzlik lab for Henzlik laptops). However the laptop needs to be on the UNL network in order to print to the designated UNL printer.

Q21: I still have some old Vendacards (laser print cards)...or CBA Blue Print Punch Cards...what do I do with them?
A: Students were given the entire fall 2003 semester to exchange Vendacards (and CBA Blue Print Punch Cards) for Uniprint funds. The use of all Vendacards and CBA Blue Print Punch Cards is now permanently discontinued as of Jan 1, 2004. No refunds will be provided for any unused Vendacards or CBA Blue Print Punch Cards after Jan 1, 2004.

Q22: What if the network goes down?
A: As with any networked printer, when the network goes down all printing services stop until the network comes back online.

Q23: Can I print from E-mail terminals?
A: You can print from any 1st floor Nebraska Union e-mail terminal to the laser printers in the Union computer lab. You will also be able to print from any e-mail terminal in the East Union to the laser printer on the 3rd floor computer lab.

Q24: When I graduate, or transfer, can I get a refund from my Uniprint account?
A: No. Uniprint funds are "use it or lose it" funds. We encourage every user to "print like crazy" in order to use up any funds you may have in your Uniprint account before you graduate or transfer to another school.

Q25: Is Uniprint going to be expanded to other labs outside of Information Services?
A: Yes. Uniprint is already available to users of the CBA Coe lab, UNL Libraries, CIT Labs, CEHS labs, College of Journalism and Barkley Center labs. Plans are in the works to implement Uniprint in other areas of campus as well. More details on this to follow soon.

Q26: What happens to my balance at the end of each semester?
A: Any funds in your Uniprint account will be carried forward to the next semester.

Q27: Can I transfer funds in my Uniprint account to another person?
A: No. All funds in your Uniprint account are yours only and are nontransferable.

Q28: I noticed extra money in my Uniprint account. Where did it come from?
A: Certain departments, programs and colleges have paid for additional funds to be placed into their students' Uniprint accounts. In most cases, these funds are use it or lose it, and are non-accumulating.
